Hans Bellmer, La Poupée, c. 1930.
“It was all worth my obsessive efforts, when, amid the smell of glue and wet plaster, the essence of all that is impressive would take shape and become a real object to be posessed.” – Hans Bellmer, Memories of a Doll Theme.
Marcel Duchamp (1887 – 1968)
Mile of String, 1942. First Papers of Surrealism exhibition, New York
The exhibition included paintings and sculptures by more than thirty
artists accompanied by examples of so-called ‘primitive art’, and was
designed by Marcel Duchamp, who living up to his reputation for
iconoclasm and conceptual innovation, produced one of the most audacious
exhibition installations of the early twentieth century, threading the
entire space of the gallery with his so-called ‘mile of string’The way in which the
criss-crossing twine prohibited (blocked) engagement with the art on show might
well relate to Duchamp’s ongoing critique of surrealism…Chiharu Shiota (b. 1972)
