While it is unlikely to have anything to do with their participation in the film, both the leads–Pierre Batcheff and Simone Mareuil–would later go on to individually commit suicide. Batcheff died from an overdose of pills in 1932, while Mareuil–in an act that would not have been out of place in Buñuel and Dali’s masterpiece–stood in the middle of a French public square, doused herself in gasoline, and set herself ablaze, dying of immolation in 1954.
